"Rio de Janeiro", Brazil's most precious gem with it's sandy beaches, beautiful women and fine cuisine but like every other major city it's plagued with crime, everything from street gangs, prostitution and corrupted police. Rio is about 486.5 square miles with about six million people, twenty percent of them live in slums known as "favelas". That's about the size of Los Angeles with double the population. There are about 300 known favelas in Rio de Janeiro.

Many of the homeless in Rio de Janeiro are kids. Most of them end up joining a gang, prostitution or selling drugs. Many of the kids in the gangs are as young as 10 years ago, some have even been spotted carry high-powered semi-automatic weapons such as AK-47s.

Most of the kids are runaways , some are from homes where the parents beat and abuse them , so they end up on the streets.

poverty is tough on the human spirit, especially on kids-they don't understand the disparity, this is apart of life.

Been up into Rocinha and Vigigal when I was living in Rio and the poverty is unlike anything else I have ever witnessed. While walking around however, I did not feel as if I was in any danger. I myself am Caucasian and visited the two favelas with a Brazilian girl- all in all it was a great experience. I did however see too many disturbing things while living in the city. From the thousands of people sleeping on the street, to a group of 5-8 year old children huffing chemicals on a city bus, it's obvious that something needs to be done about the class separation in Brazil. Great info and thanks for the post-
